Changes in visual spatial organization: response frequency equalization versus adaptation level.

چکیده

Two experiments tested alternative explanations for the apparent change in visual spatial organization produced by exposure to "adapting" or anchor stimuli. The alternative positions evaluated were that the change was perceptual (adaptation-level [AL] theory) or that it was the result of response bias (response-frequency-equalization theory). In Experiment I, judgments of spatial organization were obtained for 11 different matrices of dots in a series ranging from columnar organization to rowlike organization. The 5s were exposed on alternate trials to dot patterns of extreme horizontal (rowlike) organization, to extreme vertical (columnar) organization, or to neither (control group). As predicted by both theories, judgments were systematically affected by the adapting stimuli. In Experiment II, the influence of response bias was nullified by a forced-choice procedure. Contrary to AL theory, once response bias was eliminated group differences vanished.

Visual adaptation as optimal information transmission

We propose that visual adaptation in orientation, spatial frequency, and motion can be understood from the perspective of optimal information transmission. The essence of the proposal is that neural response properties at the system level should be adjusted to the changing statistics of the input so as to maximize information transmission. We show that this principle accounts for several well-d...

Visually induced adaptation in three-dimensional organization of primate vestibuloocular reflex.

The adaptive plasticity of the spatial organization of the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) has been investigated in intact and canal-plugged primates using 2-h exposure to conflicting visual (optokinetic, OKN) and vestibular rotational stimuli about mutually orthogonal axes (generating torsional VOR + vertical OKN, torsional VOR + horizontal OKN, vertical VOR + horizontal OKN, and horizontal VOR +...

Can the theory of “whitening” explain the center-surround properties of retinal ganglion cell receptive fields?

To account for the spatial and temporal response properties of the retina, a number of studies have proposed that these properties serve to "whiten" the visual input. In particular, it has been argued that the sensitivity of retinal ganglion cells is matched to the spatial frequency spectrum of natural scenes, resulting in a flattened or "whitened" response spectrum across a range of frequencie...

Repeatability of Detecting Visual Cortex Activity in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Introduction As functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is too expensive and time consuming, its frequent implementation is difficult. The aim of this study is to evaluate repeatability of detecting visual cortex activity in fMRI. Materials and Methods In this study, 15 normal volunteers (10 female, 5 male; Mean age±SD: 24.7±3.8 years) attended. Functional magnetic resonance images were ob...

Adaptation to visual motion in directional neurons of the nucleus of the optic tract.

Extracellular recordings of action potentials were made from directional neurons in the nucleus of the optic tract (NOT) of the wallaby, Macropus eugenii, while stimulating with moving sine-wave gratings. When a grating was moved at a constant velocity in the preferred direction through a neuron's receptive field, the firing rate increased rapidly and then declined exponentially until reaching ...
